Our newest brand KTO has all the right elements of a favourite sustainable fashion label. The brand name means 'Know the origin' and stands for genuine transparency, organic cotton and fair-trade production, as well as contemporary designs.
We spoke to founder Charlotte about the motivation behind the brand as well as what’s next.
Who do you design for? Who is the KTO woman?
We want to design for the change makers - whether that’s someone working to bring change in their own company or trail blazing a new venture. We want to dress that woman in stylish, comfortable, and ethical clothing so that she can focus on the challenge in front of her.
What does sustainability mean to you?
We address sustainability in two ways: Firstly sustaining our earth’s ecosystem and secondly sustaining the lives of those we partner with. Each of our products are held to the highest standards of environmental and human sustainability.
You went to great length to find the right producers for your garments. Can you share a little bit about that process and why it was important for you?
We looked at the existing offering of ethical clothing and realised that it never had everything we love in clothes: sound ethics, transparency, style, and affordability. So we thought that perhaps it’s impossible to combine all these things. But through our work we found that if we went directly to suppliers and ensured each of these factors personally, then we didn’t have to compromise.
We met with quite a number of cotton farmers in India who are working to the very highest ethical standards, but who are also great to work with. We love working with people who are passionate and fun. In fact, we were surprised at how many incredible suppliers we found, and we’re really excited about the potential to work with all of them in the future!
What has been your favourite bit of customer feedback?
We’re most excited to see that people are happy with the quality of the material and style. We of course pride ourselves on having the highest ethical standards in each of our products, but we never want to make a product that we ourselves wouldn’t wear. So we’re glad to see that people enjoy wearing our clothes and we love to see how they style their outfits!
What are your next plans, what can we look forward to?
KTO is beginning to extend it’s range with an additional 50 styles in the next year. Our initial phase was to build quality basics that you could count on. You’re going to start seeing how we define our own style in the coming seasons!
